Nikau Cave
Nikau Cave is only 1 1/2 hours drive southwest of Auckland, on a sheep and cattle farm. It is one kilometre long, unspoilt, away from the crowds and home to thousands of glowworms and awesome formations.
A stream runs through and at one place must be crawled in, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed. There are also extensive gardens and farm and bush walks.
Accommodation in the Whitehouse - a small cabin with ensuite and outdoor baths. Meals by arrangment. Cave tour costs - $25 for adults and $15 for children. Bookings essential Whitehouse B&B $40 per person.
