Tuakau - A taste of Rural New Zealand
The country town of Tuakau, just a short drive south on SH 1, services a large rural community and holds local stock auctions attracting farmers and visitors from far and wide who bring the town alive (The information on these markets can be found in more detail at http://agonline.co.nz/sales/upcoming.) Famous for its cafe culture and growing range of antique and collectable stores, there are treasures to be found here by keen bargain hunters.
Tuakau still has family descendants of settlers from the ship The Ganges, living in and around the town and, in 2015, has celebrated 150 years of settlement.
In close proximity to the township is Franklin's very own limestone glow-worm cave.
Port Waikato - Where the mighty Waikato meets the sea
The landscape changes dramatically on your way to Port Waikato and Sunset Beach enjoyed by surfers and fishermen alike. Relaxed holidays, picnics and outdoor activities attract visitors to the charm of this west coast community. The limestone formations in this area were one of the backgrounds used in the filming of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.
Just follow the signs from Tuakau to get to historic Port Waikato.
